Mike's tools.
I just received a phone call that my friend Mike Sakamoto died last night after a long battle fighting cancer. Our world has lost a shining light. Contrary, funny, compassionate, intelligent… these are all words that come to mind when I think of Mike. I am so sorry for his family’s loss. It seems just like yesterday that I learned he had been diagnosed with cancer and we all hoped and prayed that he would win the battle.
A local legend because of his famous fishing show “Fishing Tales”, I met Mike later in his life as he enjoyed figuring out what he wanted to be when he grew up. At a Hilo archery meet I introduced my father to Mike. I smile as I recall Mike’s answer when my dad asked him his occupation. Mike paused then grinned as he said “I’m an artist.” And he was. Over the past several years I have known Mike, his art filled him with joy and satisfaction. He would dive into different media, enjoying the experience, triumphing eventually but always valuing the journey to success. His ceramic “early work” became treasured dog dishes. To those he gifted with a bowl or cup, those items are as precious as his finest paintings.
I wish all the best to his family including his wife, children and his beloved dog Cappy. I can’t begin to imagine the sense of loss they are going through.
That’s a nice story you told about him and such an appropriate title. How can you not smile when you think of him laughing? I’ve posted some of my memories of him as well.
Oh,he had the best show!I watched it long ago, even though I am not much of a fisher. He was kind of a local star.
Thank you for writing this beautiful blogpost about my dad. How did you know him? Please email me so we can chat about him.
